Jan's Joyful Journey

Jan's Joyful Journey

About Jan

Jan has worked in the Social Services field for over 20 years. She told me that due to confidence issues, she and no specialization, and as time moved on, ageism became a challenge. Both factors had her cornered into many unhappy jobs, and she began on a slippery slope into discouragement and disappointment. She tried many times to gain momentum and make herself marketable, but to no avail.?She wondered where to begin in a technological society that is ever changing.

While moving through this season of her life, she prayed for a direction and answers—eventually she connected with me. She told me that she "really did not understand the depths of my situation and discouragement until I had the listening ear of a professional." When we began talking, and I began to ask pointed questions, she had a glimmer of hope for her situation.

What was your main challenge when it came to job searching?

Beyond someone who would listen to me and encourage me, I realized I needed help developing a strategic plan for success. I knew what LinkedIn was. I understood the power of social media. I had a resume, references, and a degree. However, what I did not comprehend was that none of these resources were stand alone. Together they were my access to positions and employers where I would use my strengths to make a difference in the Social Services field.

What happened after we started working together?

Empowered, I no longer felt the need to stay in the position I had but was ready and confident to pursue other options.?With my confidence level bolstered, I received a message on LinkedIn regarding a position that I would be a good fit for.? Not only was I a good fit, but it was the perfect position for me. I would be using my Connector, Belief, and Command strengths.?

I have been in the position for 1.5 years, and am I ever grateful. My job description changed to include other relevant skills, and I am in awe of the opportunity I get to live every day.

How did our work together help you?

Marcia and I began with interviewing techniques, discussed my skills, and began to re-create a resume based on my strengths. Also, with Marcia’s help I used those original stand-alone resources to create a professional platform to connect with professionals in the Social Services field.

Marcia has been a joy to work with, and she exemplifies patience, wisdom, creativity, and passion.?All negative situations begin with communication of the issues and concerns at hand. Someone we know has the knowledge we need, and Marcia was that someone for me.?

What is your best piece of career advice?

Maya Angelou stated "Go into a library and just make yourself a list. Say, 'I will read from A to B.' Read. All knowledge, my dear young woman — all knowledge — is spendable currency, depending upon the market."

In other words, learn about yourself and the job market, and do the work to carve your path your way.

Embark on your own Joyful Journey to Career Success!

We can be really good at our jobs, yet not have the skills necessary to advance our careers. Add in a lack of confidence, confusion, doubt, and uncertainty, and your professional ambitions can seem difficult to realize. The truth is that job searching is a skill, and unless someone teaches you that skill, it's hard to manifest your gifts and achieve your dreams. A coach can help you develop those skills, build your confidence, and be the listening ear that makes the difference in your trajectory.
