I am a Janitor and I Save Lives. Some years ago I trademarked this statement to articulate the importance I feel about the profession. Over the years since, I have seen and heard many version of this, but last night, a TV show got my attention and I have to share it with you.
In the opening scenes the hospitals' favorite custodian, Simon, is seen cleaning up after a surgery, when he is stopped and told he needs to have an issue checked out.
Later in the show, as Simon lays in his hospital bed, he tells the doctor and friend Conrad,
"You know, I love my job, pays not great, but everyday I get to help you save lives and I sleep like a baby."
While I don't want to spoil the end, you have to watch and see the powerful ending for yourself. Then let me know if you see it the same way as I do.

6 年First of all they are not Janitors! They are Environmental Services. They are a key component in the involvement of preventing surgical site infections and I appreciate them! Thank you environmental services for helping to keep our patients safe ??

6 年Aside from the gratuitous advertisement for Rubbermaid cart, wipers and on-board solution mop, the representation of the EVS worker was very good. Having done the post-case cleaning of the ER and the OR after a bloody case, I can relate to Simon. Simon represented the heart of most EVS workers I've had the privilege to lead in the past 38 years. God bless them all for SAVING LIVES!

6 年Over the years, when our workers asked me what their official job title was... I would always tell them, 'Technician'... because what they do is 'technical'... and what we offer our clients is a 'technology'.
