Recently released survey from HHS on 2021 substance abuse and mental health finds 23% of adults (18+) had a mental illness, but 67% of adults that have had a mental illness stated that they were recovered or in recovery. Among people aged 12 or older in 2021, 57.8% used tobacco, alcohol, or an illicit drug in the past month (also defined as “current use”).
