James Farmer Jr.: The Great Debater who destroyed Segregation
Tomorrow (May 1, 2017) the state of Texas will honor one of our most important Texans: James Farmer Jr. He is unquestionably one of the Big Four Civil Rights leaders alongside men like Martin Luther King. As a precursor to the major components to the Civil Rights Movement, the historical marker that will be erected in Marshall where Farmer was born, is an important step in recovering an intellectual giant. Farmer through debate training destroyed one of the most pernicious features of American racism: Segregation.
In honor of this occasion, I will be in Marshall Monday for the dedication and I have produced two short videos explaining who Farmer is [a one minute video and a five minute video]. I am also making available tomorrow two portions of my new book about Farmer. I hope people will take time to get to know James Farmer Jr. His interactions with Malcolm X and so many other aspects of race history shed bright intellectual light on our current struggles.
