James Bond Themes Part Five: What Might Have Been
Rejected theme songs are good songs. They may not have fit the tone of the film. Alice Cooper's The Man With the Golden Gun is like his other songs in that era.
Maybe the producers did not want consecutive pop singers in the franchise. If they kept up with the times; Moonraker would have been a disco song. Not every musician fits the format.
Johnny Cash's take on Thunderball would have worked for a western. The Beach Boys submitted a song for You Only Live Twice. It's good. They did not place James Bond on a surfboard.
It stands to reason any song that is not well received leads others to wonder what was rejected. Blondie had an interesting For Your Eyes Only. Sheena Easton's version fit the film better.
The beauty of rejected songs is they are available on YouTube. If you wonder what Goldeneye would have sounded like with Ace of Base- I cannot say if The Property of a Lady had a theme song.
That was the third Timothy Dalton movie that was proposed and never filmed. They would have used Vancouver as a location and Anthony Hopkins was interested in playing the bad guy. He would portray a more definitive villain in The Silence of the Lambs.
Interestingly, I thought of a theme song as I wrote https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/question-why-thomas-jackson
I envisioned Bernard Lee in the role of M. It was another way to capture the way the world felt in 2020 and the return to intimacy- I still need a return to form. Not tonight.
Picturing a romantic woman singing A Question of Why- it is far more interesting than using artificial intelligence to write. That is not a popular opinion and that should be the villain in Bond 26.
So, will there be a part six to this series? There has been no announcement for anther film. No false start, no rumors, no candidates. Some of the candidates have aged out of the role as producers have lollygagged. I cannot say if there will be another Bond film. Many elements of the series keep me engaged.
