In the 19th century, Jamaica Plain became one of the first streetcar suburbs in America and home to a significant portion of Boston's Emerald Necklace of parks, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Its superb historic mansions harken back to a time when Boston's wealthy citizens maintained country estates here.
A stroll through beautiful residential neighborhoods, in the Gothic, Victorian, Italianate styles, complements shopping at the innovative small businesses on Centre Street. Eat your way around the world on Centre and South Streets. Visitors will delight in the great pub scene, and restaurants including Cambodian, Japanese, Thai, Indian, Mexican, Chinese, Greek, Dominican, and Italian. The district boasts one of Boston's only authentic Asian tea houses and two landmark ice cream shops.
Each year approximately 4,000 people arrive at Jamaica Pond at sunset with lanterns in a parade around the pond, bringing a trail of bouncing lights into the darkness that can be seen from all directions.
