Jamaica Customs strengthens response to border threats
Jamaica Customs Agency capacity to respond to existing and emerging border risks has been bolstered following another successful risk management training. ?
The training workshop, delivered by Duncan Porter ?(World Customs Organisation), aims to, among other things, develop effective risk management strategies in order to interdict firearms traffics and smuggling attempts at legal ports of entry.
Commenting on the training, Racquel Neath, director for risk management, said that the training workshop focused ?“scoping areas and critical elements needed in a risk management plan.” She explained that this is important because “Jamaica’s trade and travel risks are constantly changing and evolving.?In recent times, we have seen the emergence of new threats, such as the smuggling of synthetic drugs and ammunition originating from a country considered low risk for this contraband type.
Neath further shared that “having a plan that identifies, assesses, treats, and monitors risks associated with the movement of people, goods, and conveyances is crucial in improving the Agency's overall efficiency and effectiveness.”
Jamaica Customs is the unified revenue, trade, and border agency within the Government of Jamaica charged with the management, control and protection of our nation’s border at, and between official ports of entry while facilitating lawful trade and travel.
