Jamaica Customs’ new age HR: Create a Culture of Greatness

For decades, most people associated the word "human resources" with recruiting and providing basic resources. But aside from talent acquisition and infusing a positive work attitude, Jamaica Customs Agency’s Human Resource Management and Development (HRMD) Division has gone further—the Division is building a purpose-driven?corporate?community.

According to Tamara Archer Reid, Senior Director, Human Resource Management and Development, "the role of HR has evolved over the years."

She added, "At the JCA, no longer is the thinking just about completing routine functions."?

With products and services such as Peer Support Network, HRMPowerment, Spiritual Wellness Programme, Month of Wellness, HR Buzz Magazine and diversified training initiatives, no Customs employee is left behind.

Archer Reid believes that the role of HR has evolved to include "a sustained engagement programme, leveraging data analytics to make decisions, and instituting a strong culture of employee wellness."??

Commenting on the work of the Division, Information Officer Alicia Bennet said that JCA’s HR has come ‘full circle.’

"Tamara and her team are doing an excellent job—there is inclusivity and initiatives that address the vein of the organisation, which is essential for a productive working environment," Bennett explained. She further pointed out that Customs employees are being exposed to greater life skills that are beneficial in today’s world. "There is a greater thrust by HR to ensure that staff members are more healthy, spiritually and financially aware—this is evidenced by the various workshops and programmes that are held monthly to bring these issues to the fore."

Bennett believes that the Division has become so modernised that anachronistic HR processes have become a thing of the past.

"They have managed to integrate technology into all their processes, which, in turn, makes it easier for staff to interface with their services."

Hyacinth Mitchell, Chief Office Attendant, agreed with her sentiments and praised the HR team for the work they have done to improve staff welfare.?

"They are people people—you can call them at any time to resolve issues you’re experiencing," Mitchell shared with a smile. "I like that they are approachable, and they try to include spiritual and mental wellbeing in everything they do."?

The Division is celebrating HRM Week (Oct. 2–8), which started with the team worshipping at the Portmore New Testament Church of God on Sunday (Oct. 2). This year’s theme is "Create a Culture of Greatness" while embracing the principle of “Transforming Lives…One Initiative at a Time”.?
