Jamaica Customs launches training with French Government to ramp-up fight against illicit imports

Jamaica Customs' efforts to combat illicit importation are set to receive a boost through a workshop, focusing on targeting and container search. This workshop is being sponsored by the Direction of Security and Defence Cooperation of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the French Embassy in Jamaica and the French Customs Administration.

.The aim is to equip customs officials with advanced skills and knowledge in the identification of contraband and illicit substances within shipping containers. With the ever-evolving methods employed by smugglers, this initiative reflects a proactive approach to enhancing border security and protecting Jamaica? potential threats.

During her remarks at the opening session yesterday (Feb. 19), ?Customs CEO/Commissioner Dr. Velma Ricketts Walker, CD, J.P. r emphasised the need for relevant strategies and tools, highlighting the importance of workshops like ALCORCA in equipping officers with the necessary skills, knowledge, and competences.

"As Customs administrations, we must robustly and effectively combat illicit activities using the latest technologies and skill sets," Ricketts Walker stated. She acknowledged the substantial investments made by the criminal underworld in undermining legitimate trade and emphasized the necessity for a coordinated approach with international partners."
