5 ways to get top talent interested in your role - through LinkedIn dms.

Are you responsible for hiring and not getting the quality of candidates you need for a position?

As a top talent sourcer with years of experience on the candidate engagement side of recruiting, I've seen what works and what doesn't when reaching out to candidates on LinkedIn about an open role. Here's 5 lessons I've learned about how to get the best prospective candidates to respond to your direct message.

  1. Check their activity. If your prospect has no connections, no profile photo, no recent posts or comments, and doesn't appear to have been active on LinkedIn in years, its very likely they will not see your dm no matter what you write. In this scenario I usually send a connection request only, and move on to other prospects, or use alternate contact methods like cell phone or email.
  2. Take a look at their profile before messaging them. This goes hand in hand with the first point of checking their activity - give their LinkedIn a careful once-over before messaging them. If you're blasting out Inmails without viewing their profile, you're undoubtedly going to message some people who are unqualified for your role. Also, the top talent that you do want, who is constantly pinged by recruiters, is going to notice that you did not even care to look at their profile before reaching out. Don't align yourself with the spam messages they already receive.
  3. Be honest and direct with them. Don't try to warm up your prospect with a "how are you?" dm. It will not get the same response as something professional, brief, and direct. In the first message you send, go ahead and ask if they're interested in a new role and open to chat, and provide some details about who you are looking for. People are usually immediately suspicious that they are being sold to when a stranger dms them on LinkedIn, so don't beat around the bush. Just tell them what you have to offer and why you've reached out to them. If you tell yourself that you're going to "establish rapport" by sending a couple of vague dms.... in my opinion, it never happens that way. People are busy, so just get to the point. Also, LIST THE PAY RANGE.
  4. Highlight a unique item from their profile. I've seen improved response rates by making a change as simple as highlighting something from their profile to show that I'm not a bot. Something like " Hi [name], UPenn and a Engineering degree - very impressive! Curious to know if you're considering other roles at this time. We have a......"
  5. Try out video or voice messages. There are companies out there offering video and voice Inmail services, but you can actually do it for free. This is easiest to do from the LinkedIn mobile app, and is a unique way to stand out in what is otherwise a very cluttered LinkedIn inbox. But remember to keep it short and sweet, and don't send a low-quality video or a voice message full of "Ums" and "Uh's !
