3 Things every job seeker should know:

I was new to the job search a few years ago. I had worked for the US Military for over 5 years, and did not truly understand what I was walking into as I transitioned off of active duty. I became active on LinkedIn and started applying for jobs, and learned a lot of hard lessons. Here's 3 things I wish I knew back then, and now on the other side of the desk as a recruiter, they're the things I wish every job seeker knew:

  1. Complaining about the job market is a waste of time. LinkedIn can be dangerous. Lots of people on here are trash-talking employers, recruiters etc. Sure, there are bad apples, but if you want a job, just joining the complain-train will not get you one. Your experience in the job market is affected by many complex factors, and highly dependent on individual company, as well as your specific situation. There are certainly things wrong with the current state of hiring, but the quickest way to get ignored during your job search is to start posting on social media about how hard it is to get a job. Instead, learn to deal with rejection, learn how to apply to the right roles, who to talk to, how to network... and you may find the job market is kinder than it seems. Its certainly kinder than social media would have you believe.
  2. Having a metric-driven, tailored resume will take you far. Cut your resume in half. I promise you, it can be done. Focus it on all the measurable accomplishments in your career - the biggest bragging points with numbers attached. And use Harvard's Resume Guide to build the right language, phrasing, and formatting (you can find it on google). Take the time to tailor it for each and every role, or you'll be wasting time submitting your application. Then, call, dm, inmail, email, and send smoke signals to the company until you've confirmed that someone actually received your application. Ask (nicely) for a time that you can expect to hear feedback. Then continue applying to other roles until hired.
  3. Getting Hired is not about you, its about the company's need. Ask about in interview - see if you can identify the pain point for the hiring manager, and describe not why you're awesome, but how you can deliver value that will positively impact the company and solve that problem. And back it up with metrics and other times you've delivered value. At the end of the day, every company is fundamentally looking to do 2 things: increase revenue, or decrease costs. Remember that when you're interviewing!

We used to say in the military that "no one cares about your career more than you." That's something that is definitely true beyond the military as well - but some of us are here to help. Follow me for more tips that could make your job search just a bit easier.
