Jake Gyllenhaal Was Considered for Batman in Christopher Nolan’s Trilogy, David S. Goyer Says

In Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, Christian Bale's portrayal of Batman is iconic, but screenwriter David S. Goyer recently revealed that Jake Gyllenhaal was considered for the role. During a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Goyer, who played a significant role in developing the trilogy's storyline and co-wrote "Batman Begins" in 2005, mentioned that several actors auditioned for the part of Batman (Bruce Wayne) in the first film. Goyer personally advocated for Jake Gyllenhaal, praising both Gyllenhaal and Christian Bale's abilities as actors.

When asked if there might be audition footage of Gyllenhaal wearing the Batman costume, Goyer suggested that such footage might exist.

Regarding other roles in Nolan's trilogy, Goyer noted that there were various candidates considered for the character Ra's Al Ghul. Ultimately, Liam Neeson was chosen, partly because of his age, which aligned better with the paternal aspect of the story, emphasizing the shadow of Bruce Wayne's father.

In "Batman Begins," Ken Watanabe was credited as Ra's al Ghul, serving as a decoy, while Liam Neeson portrayed the real Ra's al Ghul, returning for "The Dark Knight Rises" in 2012 as Henri Ducard.

Goyer also shared an interesting anecdote about an executive from Warner Bros. suggesting that Leonardo DiCaprio should play the Riddler in a future film during the premiere of "The Dark Knight" in 2008. However, Goyer explained that Christopher Nolan's approach to filmmaking was different. Nolan preferred a more naturalistic and thematic storytelling process, focusing on the story's core elements and themes before selecting a villain that organically fit within the narrative, rather than building a film around a specific villain character.
