In a heartening display of unity and compassion, the city of Jaipur has come together to support twenty-two-month-old Hridyansh in his fight against Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 2. This inspiring story of communal solidarity was amplified by prominent figures such as actor Sonu Sood and cricketer Deepak Chahar, who used their platforms to bring widespread attention to the cause.
Initiated by Hridyansh's family in March, the crowdfunding campaign quickly gained momentum. The support from various societal sectors, including significant contributions from NGOs and social organizations, played a pivotal role in mobilizing resources. Over three months, the campaign successfully raised ?9 crore, with Hridyansh receiving the much-needed Zolgensma injection, the world's most expensive drug, at JK Lone Hospital in Jaipur.
As reported by IANS, a doctor involved in Hridyansh’s treatment confirmed, “The world's most expensive injection, costing ?17 crores, was administered to a 23-month-old child suffering from spinal muscular atrophy. With the help of crowdfunding, the Zolgensma injection was brought from the US to Jaipur.”
This monumental effort underscores the challenges faced by many Indian families dealing with SMA, a genetic disorder with significant financial burdens due to the high cost of treatments like Zolgensma. While there is no official data on the prevalence of SMA in India, studies indicate that the disorder affects approximately 1 in 10,000 live-born babies. Furthermore, about 1 in 38 Indians are carriers of the SMA gene, compared to 1 in 50 in Western countries.
Hridyansh’s story is a beacon of hope, highlighting the power of community and the profound impact of collective action in overcoming formidable challenges. This remarkable journey not only provided a lifeline for Hridyansh but also shone a light on the broader issue of accessibility and affordability of critical medical treatments in India.
