Jail

Jail

People love to be in bars to enjoy themselves, but the tables turn when they find themselves behind bars.

When people land themselves in jail, they wonder what they did, or didn't, that they find themselves in a place they never desired.

Jail is not always physical, but many a times mental. A place where you find yourself locked, a place you see darkness around, a place you want to get out of as quickly as possible.

But the question is what got you there in the first place.

There are three reasons.

Ignorance: The most innocent reason is ignorance. You may find yourself on the wrong side of the law in an alien country and maybe unaware of some rules which may lead to a brush with the authorities. You may also be learning and getting acquainted, which may take you to darkness as part of your learning curve.

Being ignorant is not so much a shame as being unwilling to learn - Benjamin Franklin

Incompetence: Many either overestimate their abilities, or underestimate the requirements of a task or an assignment. As a result, they often find themselves in a hole. While confidence in achieving the impossible is a good trait, foolish optimism can ruin one’s life.

The problem with incompetence is its inability to recognize itself - Orrin Woodward

Indifference: The most common problem, however, is indifference. People either have a lax approach, or are too casual. They never acknowledge the gravity of the situation, or keep sidestepping the effort, hoping things will fall into place by themselves. They believe in crossing the bridge when they come to it, and often find themselves in deep waters.

Indifference is the invisible giant of the world – Ouida

While we all pay the price for all of the above, we can overcome the adversity if we ensure the ignorance is not repeated, and incompetence is not overlooked.

But indifference is incurable. It not only defines our approach but also gets us into a rut that leads us back into jail again, and again.

We are products of our past, but we don't have to be prisoners of it - Rick Warren
