1 in 66 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. 75% diagnosed are boys. Over 80% of marriages fail after they receive the diagnosis. I could continue sharing more depressing statistics, but I would rather tell about God’s grace.
Day 30/30. Today is an incredibly special day. It is another day we can spend with Jacob. Our experiences with Jacob have brought us both horrible and beautiful memories. We have worried more, we have cried a lot, and we have laughed uncontrollably because of him. Every day with him is special, and it is another day of joy.
“You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.” — Psalm 45:7 & Hebrews 1:9
God continues to bless Jacob, and we could not do what we do as parents without God’s grace. He carries us through really difficult times, and He restores our joy. Our journey is not possible without trusting Him to lead us through the trials and equip us with just enough strength to face them. It is His grace that floods me with peace at 3:00am writing this after battling emotions the night before. It is also His grace that reminds me that Jacob is in good hands. We see it every day through the millions of simple things and the hundreds of wonderful people He brings into Jacob’s life.
I do believe God has a sense of humor. We did not know that the name Jacob in the Bible means “supplanter - to trip up or overthrow”. Our lives have been turned upside down and we find ourselves ‘wrestling’ with God daily. But each day, we limp away with a blessing.
I praise Him, I thank Him, and just as quickly, I ask Him for help. Help with Jacob and help with my doubt as his father.
Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?’ Matthew 14: 31
Thank you, Lord, for blessing us with such a remarkable person. He has truly made our lives exciting and wonderful. Thank you for all of the superheroes you have brought into our lives to help at just the right time and the many who have become Jacob’s friends. May all who read this be anointed with the same joy we experience every day.
