Jack's apprenticeship at Stannah

At Stannah, apprenticeships are more than just a programme; they're a vital part of our ethos and commitment to nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals across diverse roles. From engineering to quality assurance, sales, and beyond, our apprenticeships offer hands-on experience and tailored support for personal and professional growth.

We caught up with Jack Cox, our Apprentice Quality Inspector, to get his insights into his experience at Stannah.

?

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship for hands-on learning, industry exposure, and practical skill development. It aligns with my career goals, providing a unique and effective way to gain experience and enhance employability. After trying various jobs including another apprenticeship that I decided were not a good fit for me I then applied for Stannah.

?

How did you come across the opportunity at Stannah and what was the interview process like?

I applied for Stannah through their careers page whilst seeking an alternative career. After being invited for an initial telephone interview, which was easily arranged, I then came into Stannah for a formal interview with my current manager Paul. I was then shown to the inspection team where I performed a hands-on task related to the job to display my comprehension to the tasks I would then be performing as an Apprentice Quality Inspector.

?

How did you find it being an apprentice in the workplace?

As an apprentice at Stannah, I have found the experience extremely informative. It offered hands-on learning, enhancing my skills and expanding my industry understanding. The supportive environment and the mentorship from my team is invaluable, contributing significantly to my professional growth and building confidence in my career in quality.

?

How do you manage working and studying?

Balancing work and studying involve effective time management. I prioritise tasks in order of importance, establish a schedule, and utilise breaks for studying as well as studying outside of my working hours. Communicating with my team and supervisors helps create a supportive work environment that accommodates my educational commitments and allows to me to plan my study time proactively. Within my team at Stannah are multiple individuals with decades of experience who are great to consult when doing my assignments.

?

Are there any considerations to think about when doing an apprenticeship?

I would consider industry demand, the facilities for mentorship, and long-term prospects. Assess how the apprenticeship aligns with your goals and the potential for growth within the organisation.

?

Are there any characteristics that you need to be an apprentice?

I think to excel as an apprentice, you should have a desire to learn, a strong work ethic, adaptability, good communication skills, and be prepared to follow instructions. Being open to constructive feedback, showing initiative, and have an interest in the industry you are working in order to enjoy the working environment.
