Kelly bars are one of the essential components of drilling and piling rigs used in construction and mining operations worldwide. They are designed to transmit rotary power and axial force from the drilling rig to the drill tool or auger, enabling them to penetrate various soil and rock types. Kelly bars come in a variety of designs and configurations, two of which are J-lock and Multi-lock Kelly bars, which are particularly suitable for drilling large-diameter piles.
J-Lock Kelly bars are a type of drilling tool with a single/double or triple locking system that rotates to secure the drilling auger. They are designed to provide a stable and consistent drilling operation while transmitting torque and axial force from the rotary drive to the drill tool or auger. Machine brands like Bauer, Liebherr, etc use J-lock type?Kelly?bars.
Like other drilling rig components, J-Lock Kelly bars come in different sizes and designs to cater to various drilling requirements. Their sizes and capabilities depend on the specific model and design.
The J-lock Kelly bar system has the advantage of having a rather large support location where the rotary locks and?presses?onto the?Kelly. This results in less maintenance/repairs required on the locks over time.
However, J-lock?Kelly?bars come with their limitations –?the?inability to lock the rotary at any point throughout the length of the element.
On the other hand, Multi-lock Kelly bars are another popular type of drilling tool that provides enhanced torque transmission capabilities and multiple locking systems. Unlike J-Lock Kelly bars, Multi-lock Kelly bars have locks on the entire length of the element of the bar, which prevents rotation and slippage while drilling. They offer increased stability and adaptability to different drilling rig types, making them ideal for drilling large diameter piles.

As with everything, the multi-locks have their disadvantages – being a smaller lock, it tends to wear quicker than the larger j-lock, requiring more maintenance.
Multiple brands use the multi-lock style as well, with the most popular being IMT Drilling and Piling Rigs. In fact, IMT is one of the only manufacturers of?piling?rigs that?have?the option to?install?and use both J-lock and multi-lock??Kelly?bars.
Overall, both J-Lock and Multi-lock Kelly bars are essential drilling tools for drilling large diameter piles. Selecting the appropriate Kelly bar style, size and design requires considering several factors such as rig operator, rig size, soil conditions,?and so on. J-Lock Kelly bars are suitable for providing stability and consistent drilling operations, while Multi-lock Kelly bars offer enhanced torque transmission capabilities and adaptability to different drilling rig types. In conclusion, both Kelly bars are efficient tools for drilling large diameter piles that can provide maximum performance, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in the drilling process.
TerraQUIP Drilling Equipment offers both options (J-lock and Multi-lock) for Kelly Bars to be used on IMT Drilling and Piling Rigs and the IMT rotaries are the only rotaries capable of using both types of Kelly Bars.
