FIREHOUSE: The Perfect Storm: Preventing Operational Catastrophe

With the ever changing roles in fire and emergency services there are many opportunities for our organizations to shine. Just as importantly, there are as many opportunities for our organizations to suffer the ramifications of poor decisions. Often after a negative event, organizations realize that there were red flags that were either ignored or missed which contributed to the development of “The Perfect Storm." This program discusses common red flags and situations that must be addressed and corrected to keep firefighters safe. From morale issues to safety concerns, equipment failures to changing standard operating procedures, the process of forecasting what could happen in the future is the same. Students will learn effective ways to manage the risks and create a culture of change whether they are a probationary member or the chief.

FIREHOUSE: What Fire Service Data is Telling Us This Year

Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 2:00 EST

Data and effective analysis in the fire service have the potential to reduce community risk, improve responder safety, and ultimately, transform fire departments. That’s why ESO wants to do their part to make more data accessible to everyone.

Based on more than 600,000 calls from across the US, the 2019 ESO Fire Trends Report propels that conversation and makes nationwide data available to everyone. From the smallest volunteer department to a professional department serving a major metropolitan area, fire department leaders can use the data in this Report to answer questions such as:

What is the breakdown for types of calls are we responding to?

Which building types are showing most civilian injury and/or death?

What is the fire loss per property type?

How well are sprinklers and smoke detectors reducing civilian injury/death?

The purpose of this Report is to help fire departments identify which areas are in alignment and which areas represent an opportunity for further evaluation or improvement.

Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at 12:30 EST

The WUI-NITY project aims at developing an integrated software platform for the simulation of wildland-urban interface (WUI) evacuation scenarios that can be used both before an incident for planning and during an incident to inform decisions. The primary application of this platform is the ability to generate dynamic vulnerability maps from coupled fire, pedestrian, and traffic submodels.
