We often highlight and celebrate women whose impact and roles are visible on the world stage; athletes, politicians, and Nobel prize winners…but many women already occupy the most important role in society.

Teachers.

Women who have chosen to dedicate their lives to the education of others. But there are many women around the world who, as a result of discrimination, oppression and conflict do not have the education that they deserve.?

I am extremely grateful to be part of the 99% of women in Singapore who are literate, unlike in Niger, Western Africa where literacy rates for women are only 11%.?

I am fortunate to be able to buy sanitary towels and menstrual-health products with my expendable income and not to have to miss 3 days of school every month because of my period, like girls in Kenya, the Philippines and Uganda.?

I am grateful to be a female leader in an organisation that supports women but yet only 25% of national government seats worldwide are held by women.?

The first female prime minister in the world was Sir Lankan, but in Sri Lanka sex-selective abortion that preferences male babies over female babies still prevails.?

India first began talking about feminism in 1848 with its first female teacher and social reformer Savitribai Phule. But India is also considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world for sexual violence against women.?

Let us remember that although progress has been made, there is still much work left to be done.?

Students are fundamental in shaping the future of gender equality in our world. They have the power to challenge stereotypes, advocate for inclusivity, and stand up against injustice. Whether through education, service, or simply treating others with respect and equality, your actions can and will make a difference. Let us work together to create a world where every woman and every girl is empowered to reach her full potential.

Happy International Women’s Day!
