IWD 2023 #DareToBe | Week 1: Introduction
In celebration of International Women's Day, I reached out to Gbolahan Adebayo (an amazing data analyst in Nigeria) and we decided to reimagine David McCandles’ Diversity in Tech visualization (▼) together.
For the next few weeks, we'll share our progress on a weekly basis.
Jiwon: I shared with Gbolahan that I recently met Timothy Goodman,
who is one of my favorite American artists, and had this project idea
lingering in my head: He and Jessica Walsh (another phenomenal graphic
designer) did a project called '40 days of dating' 10 years ago, and I
loved how you could see their burst of creativity separately answering
the exact same questions for 40 days.
I thought, "I want to make something cool for International Women's Day,
but wouldn't it be amazing if I could have someone more experienced with
data visualization join me and share how he/she works on a project the
way Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh shared their thoughts?" As a fan
of Gbolahan's works on Tableau Public and #Makeovermonday LinkedIn posts,
I wanted to ask him first and couldn't believe he said yes right away!
Gbolahan: The idea of recording our experiences and logging them felt
really wonderful. I was inspired by her willingness to reach out to me
with an end result in mind.
Gbolahan: Ecstatic! On a personal level, the job search is going really
difficult and there are presidential elections in my country [Nigeria].
Aside from that, this project offers something unique and I am really
excited!
Jiwon: Motivating! Working on this data visualization project means a lot
to me, because I want more men and women to feel empowered. I love the
theme #DareToBe and want to encourage more women to celebrate being a
woman today. And I've been working with Roya, another Google Women
Techmakers Ambassador, to organize an IWD event in Boston.
March is going to be a busy but meaningful month for me this year!
