I’ve never had to make a resume

I’ve never had to make a resume

Yeah, well almost. I made a resume in college that was pretty much a copy paste of my friend’s resumes. When I go back and read it now, I shake my head at how na?ve I was. That resume showcased next to nothing of who I was as a person, a problem solver or a passionate individual. Sure, it had a lot of well-worded adjectives (my fatal flaw as a content writer) but very little else.

Having landed my first job with that not-so-great resume though, I’ve never again had to make another.?

I’ve now worked at a huge IT corporate as a Salesforce developer, had metaphorical doors slammed in my face as a Business Developer for an EdTech firm, celebrated in other people’s achievements with the creative team of an event management firm, tried teaching language to a machine as a knowledge developer and am now working as the marketing partner at a creative MarTech Consultancy. Each of these roles have been fulfilling and have enhanced my perspective of the world.

The way that life has worked out, each of the companies I’ve worked for after my first have hired me after having seen my skills in action, one way or another. They didn’t need to know what marks I scored in engineering (Electronics and Communication – not even remotely relevant to my current work), if I’d done a course in Java (had to have something worthwhile in there) or how I’d won debates in high school (cue the #nostalgia).

All they cared about was if I brought in the right skill set needed for the organization, if I was good at it and if I was willing to put in the effort to learn the things I didn’t already know.?

In fact, the current company I work at TOSS the COIN embodies this message in more ways than one. In my interview with them in fact I wasn’t even given a set of tasks I’d need to do, they simply said - All of us take on multiple roles, we pitch in without heed to hierarchy and get things done. We bring in passion to work, creativity in all we do and embrace failure, but beyond it all we always respect each other and the people we work with. If that sounds good to you, come onboard and we’ll figure out your role.??

Was it any wonder that I took on the role with gusto?

It is easy to get caught up in the decisions you made as a twenty-year-old without the kind of perspective you evolve over time. Fortunately, I’ve had the opportunity to be financially independent while making career moves that are considered unconventional. I’ve picked up invaluable skills wherever I’ve worked, have had amazing peers and bosses who’ve taught me umpteen lessons by example.?

I’ve realized a resume can never tell your work story completely, but the companies you choose to work with and what you learn from each of them will. So, whenever you can, I urge you to pick a company like TOSS the COIN to work with(this is not a paid promotion ;) ), not only because it’ll determine who you become as a professional, but also a person.

Well said Rashmi! Traditional resume is like a business card - it just proves that this person exists with certain minimum criterion. It's not yet a reflection of the personality. We always believe in Personality before Skill and that's what you bring to our gang - a brilliant personality of a problem solver!
