I've Been Having These Weird Thoughts Lately..."

So I've decided to share excerpts from my Master's dissertation, "Live Alive - The Community Ecology in Livestreaming Platforms" here on LinkedIn. My research delved into the creation and evolution of communities within live content platforms, with a focus on Twitch.

Each excerpt was the intro of a chapter, where I narrate my journey as a Streamer, sharing my experiences, motivations, fears, and achievements in a first-person perspective.

The chapter titles pay homage to game series that have left a significant mark on my gaming journey. These include: The Legend of Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Super Mario Bros, Spider-Man, Pokémon, Stardew Valley, Final Fantasy, and Conker's Bad Fur Day.

"Chapter 1

I've Been Having These Weird Thoughts Lately...

My first true contact with livestreaming was in March of 2020, the same week the Covid-19 lockdown started back in S?o Paulo. From teaching and playing every weekday with small children at a school to an online trying-to-teach-and-play with children video calls, my work had changed immensely with the pandemic. Of course not only work, but my search for entertainment shifted a lot in a chase to find new ways to escape from the difficult time everyone was dealing with.

In one of these hunts for new ways to entertain myself, I stumbled upon Twitch.tv, a platform that I knew beforehand but never really dived into. Shortly after, Twitch became the main way for me and many other people to connect with new social circles and share virtual moments.

On one of those pandemic days, while I was playing my Nintendo Switch with my cat on my lap, I started to watch this English streamer play don’t-remember-what on Twitch. Not exactly watching, I started to stare at him. He was on the other side of the world, inside his room, chatting with random people while playing a video game. I was on the other side of the world, transported inside his room, chatting with random people while playing a video game.

He was basically on a stage, performing, but in this case, it didn ?t look like a character. It was him being himself. Performance... entertainment...talking in front of people...playing video games?

I mean... That’s me."
