Selling lots of books on a daily basis hasn't always been easy. In fact, I've almost thrown in the towel on a few of my books more than twice.
Many of my books, before I really figured out how to market them effectively, were frustrating, and sales were... let's just say underwhelming. I was convinced I'd wasted my time writing them, and perhaps I should focus my time elsewhere.
I spent a lot of time listening to folks who didn't share my unique characteristics and qualities (introvert-leaning-ambivert), didn't understand the job(s) of my books (depends on the book, of course), or my available time or budget.
Then I realized something crucial: writing a quality book is only half of the equation--the other half is understanding how to craft a Book Marketing Action Plan (what I call my Book MAP) customized especially for me and my book.
That realization changed everything for me. I dove headfirst into learning book marketing strategies, testing what worked, and refining my approach. Fast forward to today, and I've sold almost 5 million books worldwide in 40 languages (with 66 books published).
Wow, I just compressed twenty years into five paragraphs. Makes it seem fast and easy. It wasn't either. And ...
I would be remiss if I didn't mention that in addition to lots of time (wasted and otherwise) there was a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and workout words in there.
I had to tune out what everyone else was doing and saying, and figure out what was going to work for me. Then, I realized I had inadvertently developed a "formula with filters" (a.k.a. a process) I could apply every time I published and book. Guess what? Each book has done better than the one before (having a backlist with continuous marketing helps), all because I applied my formula and process.
Here's the thing: you don't have to figure it all out through trial and error like I did. You don't have to pay any "stupid tax" bumbling around, wasting ad spend or sitting on unopened boxes of printed books or ... whatever else might cause you to cry tears of frustration (it can't just be me).
