I always say that motivation is key when doing basically anything. Great results you won't require being consistent, and that is not always easy, because it is normal to not feel motivated all the time.
Just because I always accent the importance of motivation, I have a great way of overcoming that feeling that you are just not up to it.
First thing you should know: it does happen to everyone. Lack of motivation is on some level present even in the most motivated people. It is perfectly normal for your motivation to fluctuate and change. The important thing is that you don’t fall into the circle of excuses – making false compromises and bargaining with yourself. That leads to a loss of focus and discipline which is never good news.
What I actually do when having problems with motivation is that I limit choices for myself. I know it sounds counterproductive, but hear me out.
I give myself two choices with two outcomes. Let’s take learning German as an example.
The first choice would be that I will learn German and I will do my best. The outcome is that I will have great results and be happy.

The second choice is that I will study but not give my best. The outcome is that I will not have such great results and I will not be happy.
So, every time you are feeling a lack of motivation for a task or a goal, give yourself two choices: one that the motivated version of you would take and the outcome is to be happy; the second one is the easy choice that unmotivated version of yourself would take and the outcome is to be unhappy.
It is crucial that the outcomes are deducted from being happy and not being happy because when you give yourself this kind of limited choice, you know that every time you will choose to be happy – that is not only logical but also natural.
Why do I insist on limiting choices? Well, if you have too many choices, every one of them can become an excuse, such as “I will do it later” or “I will make it up for missing my class tomorrow”. Also, with a lot of choices, our mind is working overtime to analyze them before a decision so it blocks us from taking an action.
Our brains love “yes or no” extremes and the only two possibilities because it makes it easier to manage all the decisions and to function in a world that overstimulates our senses and overwhelms us with the possibilities.
The next time you feel the urge to fall into the excuses of not completing a task due to lack of motivation, try this out. Let me know how it worked for you.
