IU ASEAN Global Gateway Updates

IU ASEAN Global Gateway Updates

Spring greetings from the IU ASEAN Global Gateway Office!

Our email today is to briefly update you on the highlights of IU activities in the region in the past few months:

==>ASEAN Meeting-of-the-Minds: Webinar series and Alumni chats series bring IU & ASEAN scholars to discuss topics of mutual interest.?

  1. IU ASEAN “Meetings-of-the-Minds” webinar series: The webinars are on Zoom and simultaneously livestreamed on Facebook Live. The series focuses on conversations and live Q&A sessions with IU and ASEAN scholars on topics of mutual interest. For example, see the webinar on March 14th by Professor Curt Bonk and Self-Directed Learning on MOOCs. ?An upcoming webinar on April 24th will be with Mike Dwyer and Peg Sutton on “Geographies of Modernization.” If you are interested in participating and/or contributing to the series, email [email protected] or directly to [email protected]
  2. Chats with IU Alumni Associations: Our alumni chapters also organize chat series. For example, the Singapore Chapter and the Global Fintech Institute hosts a Masterclass & Fireside Chat on “ChatGPT and the Future of Work” on March 28th

==>Reunions & Celebrations: Reunions joyfully resumed after 3 years in multiple locations as well as celebrations such as International Women’s Day.?

  1. Alumni Reunions: After 3 years of being apart due to COVID, our ASEAN alumni community are joyfully reconnecting. For example, in Singapore on Feb 28th and in Indonesia on Mar 4th in tandem with Kelly’s School Global Deans’ Council meetings. The alumni turnout was always phenomenal and at times over 150 were in attendance.
  2. International Women’s Day: We celebrated March 8th with showcasing the amazing work of Dr. Nantanoot Suwannawut, Academic Officer, Bureau of Special Education Administration, Ministry of Education, Thailand. She is also the Asia Pacific representative in World Blind Union. See: https://go.iu.edu/4MU9

==> Study Abroad Programs & Global Classrooms. These are going strong and multiplying.?

  1. Study Abroad programs: We have multiple ongoing, new and in development programs in the ASEAN region. We have at least 10 ongoing programs including the Kelly School of Business, MBA GLOBASE in Indonesia, Internships in Vietnam and Thailand, Business Immersion in Singapore and Thailand. A new program is the Wright School of Education’s preservice teachers’ short-term studies visit to Batam, Indonesia.
  2. Global Classrooms: There have been several of virtual exchanges/telecollaboration between IU faculty and ASEAN colleagues. In 2023, IUPUC is collaborating with De La Salle University in the Philippines. If you would like to host or to be a part of the funded program, go to: IU Global Classroom

==>Faculty & staff travel: IU travel to ASEAN countries is also on the increase.?

  1. Faculty & Staff Travel: We see an increasing number of IU faculty and staff traveling. Just in the past few months, 30 faculty and staff have travelled to Southeast Asia. There are also upcoming travels to Singapore, led by HANDS in Autism from the IU Riley Hospital; to Manila by IU Southeast Dean of the School of Education, and to Thailand by the Jacob School of Music Dean. ?
  2. ?ASEAN Visitors: ASEAN colleagues are frequent visitors to IU. For example, in April, we welcome 16 Laotian scientists (Ministry of Health) working with IU and Purdue colleagues to research and address malnutrition challenges. We are also equally honored to receive a contingent from Srinakharinwirote University (SWU) on April 21. The visit includes SWU’s President, Vice President and 22 deans. IU & SWU’s relationship began in the 1955 when SWU was a teachers’ college. In 1968, President Herman Wells received an SWU honorary degree.?

==> Outreach and partnerships: ASEAN Global Gateway is actively engaged in events organized by multiple government and non-governmental agencies. We facilitate ongoing and new partnerships with institutions & draw from the expertise of existing partnerships.

  1. Outreach with the US & Southeast Asian government entities: The ASEAN gateway is actively engaged. For example, in March, Peter Boonjarern and Dhiny Novianti respectively represented IU at US-Embassy events on Thai-US university partnerships and Indonesia-US relationships. Faridah Pawan was in DC for the Biden/US State Department’s initiative on US-ASEAN university partnerships.
  2. Partnerships and Grant Development:?These are ongoing intensive activities. For example, there is constant IU engagement in co-creation workshops with funding agencies, multiple NGOS and institutions in Thailand, Myanmar, and the Philippines toward proposal development; multiple IU schools are working on partnership refinement and expansion with LPDP, Indonesia; and a new partnership with Thammasat University is expected to be signed in the coming months, with student participation slated for Spring 2024.?Professor Anh Tran from the O’Neal School of Public and Environmental Affairs & OVPIA Assoc VP, Teshome Alemneh, continue to lead a $14.2 million USAID-funded project on Higher Education Reform in Vietnam.

With our best wishes,

Faridah Pawan, Academic Director, IU ASEAN Gateway (Bloomington).

Peter Boonjarern, Director, IU ASEAN Gateway (Bangkok).?
