When we think about moving up the ladder, into our most desired position within our companies, many are considering hiring a coach. Why? Some of the most common reasons I’ve had from clients has been on the fact that they want to reach their goals by their deadlines. Often, it’s financially related. The new title, the new position, comes with a new salary bump. Or, they are working in a position well below their skill set because they wanted to “get their foot in the door”. There are a few things I’d like to share with you before you make your next "BIG Move".
1. Take a moment to complete a personal assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. An honest, personal SWOT analysis will help you identify what your best skills are.
2. Research the dream job requirements.
3. Without over exaggerating – review your personal SWOT with the job requirements. Would you be 60% or 80% qualified?
4. Without knowing your true, untapped potential, would you hire you?
Okay, question number 4 is where we start. When we can be brutally honest, about where we are with our current skills and experience, we begin to design a strategy to reach our goals.
Consider reviewing all of your previous performance reviews, especially the ones that you considered to be unfair or inaccurate. Why? Often, the bad reviews and comments that we don’t agree with can be areas that others see in us and we can address head-on moving forward.
Know your why. Why do you want a career move or promotion? No matter what your goal is for your career you need to know why you want it. How will your "Big Move" help you with your 3-year, 5-year and 10-year plan. Does it fit or does it cause more issues? Will it compliment your life or complicate it?
It’s your move!
