Everything in my life is my responsibility.
This is my mantra. I have lived by it and it has served me my entire life.
I’ve experienced a lot in my life and I’ve been very open in talking about it.
I’ve shared about the sexual abuse, about growing up with a mother who has bipolar, being in and out of the foster system, about my broken back and my husband dying…
It’s a lot. And none of it was my fault.
But I've learned that I have the opportunity to choose how I respond to the things that were out of my control.
This topic has been coming up a lot with my clients lately and it’s something I feel very passionate about. This is the work that I constantly do and teach to my clients.
Those terrible things from your past are never your fault, but they are your responsibility.
So many people get stuck in the blame game and bunker down in victim land (that place SUCKS by the way) but when you choose to take responsibility for the horrible things that have happened to you, the ball is in your court.
In life, things will happen that are completely out of your control. You don’t get to choose what happens, but you DO get to choose how you respond.
What has happened in your life?
What pain, what hurt, what heartache have you endured?
You can turn those things around for your GOOD.
Think about the events of your life, those things that have caused you pain and discomfort, maybe even trauma or deep tragedy.
Could it be possible that they didn’t happen TO you, but happen FOR you?
No one should ever experience those things. But in every circumstance, there is gold to be found.
Everything you experience has the potential to solidify something beautiful in you, something that you wouldn’t have known if you hadn’t endured that pain.
If you look for it, you will see that these things happened FOR you. For your good.
What area of your life can you start taking responsibility for today?
Maybe it’s managing your emotions and not flying into a rage when things go wrong.
Maybe it’s looking at the state of your relationships, your bank account balance or things going wrong in your business.
It’s not your fault, but it is your responsibility.
And once you choose to take up that responsibility, you can make your life whatever you want it to be, no matter what has happened.
I recently recorded a podcast where I talk all about this topic. You can listen to it here.
