It’s what you think you're not.

The other day, I engaged in a fascinating discussion with a prospective client who is a physician, an entrepreneur, and a truly engaging individual. He possesses a deep understanding of his field, and I believe our conversation was mutually enriching.

But, the day prior, that was not what I believed would happen.

As I prepared for our meeting, I found myself questioning my contribution to the conversation. My inner dialogue went something like this: "You're neither a doctor nor an entrepreneur. You lack expertise in software development and technology. You don't hold a prestigious degree from a top-tier institution. You earned your master's from a small Christian college! Why would this accomplished physician value your input?"

"You're going to appear foolish during this call!"

I was succumbing to self-doubt and undermining my own capabilities.

Denis Waitley, a renowned motivational speaker, author, and consultant, once said, "It's not what you are that holds you back, it's what you think you're not." Often, we compare ourselves to others or construct narratives that cause us to doubt our abilities.

My twenty-two year old son, Jackson, doesn’t have this fear. I often laugh that he hasn't yet faced the harsh realities of life. Prayfully, though, as he navigates the business world, I hope he remains humble in success and resilient in the face of failure. One thing that I think contributes to his fearless nature, is that Jackson doesn't readily acknowledge hierarchy. Whether he's collaborating with executives or networking with philanthropists, he remains true to his knowledge and authentic in his limitations. He is confident in his contributions but remains open to learning from others. This allows him to contribute in a manner that helps others to appreciate his strengths.?

His authentic approach reminds me of a time that I found myself conversing with a high-ranking executive from my company, unaware of his significance. Engaging in my usual manner, I questioned established norms and shared my insights. It was only later that I discovered his esteemed position and extensive experience. Later, this influential leader became one of my strongest supporters.?

These examples show us that approaching interactions authentically and without preconceived judgments can lead to favorable results. The belief that every individual we encounter is both a teacher and a student resonates with me and can help all of us become more secure with ourselves. When I attend meetings with an open heart and a clear mind, eager to learn, I can confidently present my authentic self, embracing both my strengths and weaknesses without hesitation.?

Everyday we are subconsciously projecting energy into the world based on our beliefs. Our beliefs influence our actions and attitudes which in turn influence the actions and attitudes of others. When our internal narrative emphasizes our strengths and potential, our external reality is more likely to mirror these empowering beliefs.?

So, if you occasionally find yourself with an internal narrative that is holding you back, evaluate those thought patterns and redirect your focus towards your strengths. Most importantly, don’t hold back and deprive yourself and others of your unique gifts and talents. You are far more capable and insightful than you give yourself credit for!??
