Here's a piece from my very first book 'The Millionaire Clown'.
Above all I just want to say - look, business is hard, but you're not alone, most people start on a rocky road. I know what it's like to wake up in the morning feeling you're in such a mess that you might as well pack it all in. I want to make you feel that it will get better. I always remember the late, great Steve Jobs saying that the reason most business owners give up is because they are sane.
If you haven't realised it by now, I'm a bloke who says what he thinks. But I'm not a nasty bastard and I certainly don't walk around as if I owned wall street. I tell it like it is, in my own slightly comical way, with a little love and sprinkle of magic.
I wanted to dedicate this book to the memory of my Mum, mandy, and my Grandad, Del Boy. Sadly I lost them both within three months of each other when I was 18. That was hard to cope with. They both would have got a real kick out of this, seeing all the things we have created. Grandad was my driver when I started out - I didn't want a driver because I thought I was royalty, I needed one, because I was only 15 years old and had no other way of getting to work to run my first business effectively. of course I paid him, though not very well I'm afraid. I think about them both all the time, and yes I do talk to them and ask for help. They never answer directly, but somehow when I've spoken to them, things seem to work out.
This adventure has taught me the nasty side of business as well as the good stuff, the stuff you can't learn unless you do it. As I said earlier, I wanted to write this book now, not when I'm old and have everything paid off and I'm fat and ugly and ready to retire (don't worry - I never will retire and I don't think I'll ever be fat either, Ugly - well, that's a matter of opinion.
You see, the nature of the beast is that usually as a business gowns it gets easier, banks, suppliers and customers love established businesses. and so they should, Business are like people - the older they get the wiser they get, as long as in my opinion, the entrepreneur at the top keeps learning and investing to make himself the best leader, listener and make-things-happen person he or she can be. I am writing this book as part of my self-development, my drive to be better, for me and my team. Entrepreneurs are very special people - they create employment. often they fail, not because they don't work hard enough but because they have not learned the rules. Yet every now and then a kid genius turns things upside down and beats the establishment.

6 年I've had plenty of the struggle but been fortunate enough to avoid the nasty stuff. Though a partner of mine had a torrid time with a customer who couldn't pay the last £20k of his bill and took to slagging my partner off on social media to relieve the cognitive dissonance!
