Two weeks in a walking boot followed by a heart-attack scare. That was me last year. The official cause of these health mishaps, according to my doctor? Work-induced stress. Who knew conference calls could be so dangerous!
I spent ten years in management consulting helping the world's most-iconic brands tackle their biggest ambitions. Those ambitions required lots of hard work. Long hours, impossible deadlines, and many nights and weekends. Unfortunately, the "glory" of "getting things done" comes with its special set of challenges.
Burnout. Low morale. In-fighting. Turnover. These challenges are rampant in workplaces the world over, and you're probably all-too-familiar with them. In fact, half of you reading this are probably looking for a new job right now. In 2019 we can look forward to a dizzying array of technological innovations, but very little in the way of workplace innovation. Go looking and you'll find trendy solutions like design thinking, open-office layouts, or one of the latest apps promising to revolutionize the way you work.
FRUSTRATED. That's how all of this makes me feel. You probably feel it, too. But, you can feel optimistic, because I made a discovery.
As it turns out, feelings and how we use them can lead us all to true workplace innovation.
We feel every second of every day (that is, to experience emotions). For the majority, emotions serve as reactions to everything life throws at us; the stuff we see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. "It's science." For some of us, emotions are more. They are the tools we use to craft memorable, impactful, and fulfilling experiences for ourselves and the people around us. You can equip yourself with these tools, too.
If you're a leader who wants to see your people thrive, it only requires you ask, answer, and act on the following questions:
- How do you want your people to feel?
- What will you do to make them feel that way?
Asking, answering, and acting on these two questions leads to a very special form of innovation, innovation that's powered by emotions, or as I've named it, emovation (emotions + innovation = emovation).
