"Now that we’ve reached a social network dead end, it’s time to build our own digital house." So says Romain Dillet, a Senior Writer at TechCrunch and I can't agree more!
For some time now, I have been advising clients to rethink their communication and marketing programs and move away from this total dependence on social networks. As Dillet says - "social networks are "no longer social." They have become bigger and the content that drives them has become less valuable almost to the point of worthless. Publicly traded companies, they play to growth rather than community or communication.
The power today is and really has always been in having your own website, your personal or professional blogpost and the email addresses of people who truly want to hear from you. The seemingly simple handoff of communication & amplification to social networks is really a bad trade off of control and reach. Adults spend hours upon hours daily checking into their phones and social networks with little understanding of how information actually gets through to the hoped for recipient. Do like Romain says "Time to leave your phone in your pocket and just start a conversation."
