It's Time to Share Your Message with the World!
For the past year, I’ve enjoyed participating in Amy Porterfield’s program designed to teach coaches and experts how to create effective online courses, and I’ve been learning a lot from her. Often, on Amy’s weekly coaching calls, various participants express their anxiety about sharing their knowledge with others through an online course. This kind of anxiety might be thought of “digital stage fright,” much as concert performers feel those “butterflies” before they step onto the stage to perform for a live audience.?
During my 35-year career in the media -- 20 years as a television news producer for a variety of media outlets (including ABC News, CNN and CBS News) followed by 15 years in the PR field – I’ve worked with quite a range of individuals who make their living by “stepping onto that stage,” literally or figuratively. I’ve enjoyed working from internationally known musicians including Paul McCartney and Miles Davis, actors like Paul Newman, and directors like Steven Spielberg.?I’ve also had the (equally fulfilling!) experience of working with first-time authors who have shared their message with readers through a self-published book.?In every case, it’s a process of “stepping outside of one’s comfort zone,” and connecting with others to create an experience that has the potential to change lives.
As we prepare to emerge from the challenge of the global pandemic, it seems as if more people than ever are seeking to create something new in this “New Normal,” rather than return to jobs that fail to tap their creativity and uniqueness. For many others, and I put myself in this category, as we’ve seen numerous friends and loved ones pass away over the past year or two, there is a sense of urgency in making certain that we fully share our knowledge and talent and make an impact on the world. I really do believe that each of us was “put here for a purpose!”

Like so many things in life, the decision to expand oneself – by writing a book, composing a new song, getting involved in a non-profit project that makes a difference, and so on – truly has to come from within.?Nevertheless, I want to take this moment to encourage you to … “go for it!” This is a time of transition and transformation for millions of people worldwide, so stepping into that “river of change and reinvention” is apt to feel more comfortable than you might imagine – or fear! Having worked with hundreds of creative individuals through my PR work over the years, I can promise you that if you do rally your courage and “step outside of your comfort zone,” the rewards really do feel so good. Those rewards may not be financial in nature, but perhaps in the heartfelt words of a longtime friend or a stranger who has become a new friend, thanking you for giving of yourself in a way that touches them in an unforgettable way!
I’ll be elaborating on this idea later this month, through a free masterclass. I’m calling this online event, “The Best-Kept Secrets of Public Relations, and How to Get the Media Recognition YOU Deserve!” You are cordially invited to join me!
Until then … please keep “the Nike philosophy” in mind: “Just do it!” You’ll be glad you did!

3 年Thanks so much for this article, Tom. You are such an expert in this area. For non digital natives, AKA people who did not grow up with technology, there's the personal fear or hesitation to overcome. And there's also a cultural--or more specifically intergenerational--bias. For our generation saying "hey look at me" was considered egotistical. Especially when it feels like shouting, for example, "this is the way to do it!" It may feel contrary to what is polite. That may even be more true for women. That's why your framing is so important. It goes from saying "let me tell you about me and how smart I am" to "here's something that could serve you." Saying to yourself how might this help someone can help diminish the fear of putting yourself out there. When you look through a lens of it's not about you, it's about them. Great piece!
Very thought-provoking!??

3 年I loved your online course! Highly recommend it to anyone looking to learn how to share their message with the world. Also as a former ballet dancer I can totally relate to “stage fright”.

3 年Tom. Great article. On line courses help you get your word out to many people. There is only "one of you" and helping people one on one in many instances may be necessary, but it is limiting if you can expand it to reach a wider customer base.
