It's time to replace the TMO

I want to propose something radical, let's replace the TMO with GPT-4. We won't need to wait more than a few seconds for infringements to be spotted and evaluated. I have even tested it on the World Cup Final - it did everything the TMO did but without any possible accusation of bias. Sam Cane?? GPT-4 does claim that it is a tough decision based on the video footage, but when push came to shove and I forced it to decide between a yellow and red card? Well here it is:

The GPT-4 TMO

So a GPT model with no specific training on Rugby agrees with a well trained human match official! Ok, so I am not proposing that AI takes over the TMO role, even though it seems to be up to the task. The reason is that humans have a natural aversion to handing over decisions to AI (even when we know it will do a better job). Perhaps it needs to be a tool that the TMO has. If it was some inexperienced referee then they should have a GPT-4 TMO to take the hard calls.

I suspect that if AI starts refereeing, fans will be even unhappier. A human ref's understanding of the need for tempo in the game, and a sense of broader context and accidental play, will be more important than the perfect AI TMO.

I want to make the point that it's the same for business. Senior Executives will not want AI to spoil the party when it comes to tough decisions?

Let's do one better, lets replace the coach with GPT-4.

As there should always really be a Human in the Loop, or a Human on the Loop, and ultimately there always has to be an accountable person for any automated decision-making process (including AI) we can just blame that human instead! Theres already automated technology in place for the ball crossing the line and for offside decions in football, so joking aside it's already here, and will start to creep into more and more of binary decision making in sports, where the ball is either in or out (like in tennis) if a ball did or didn't hit a bat (like in cricket). As you pointed out where broader context is a factor, and interpretation is necessary it still requires a human. We can see from the backlash against VAR in football, a big part of the thrill of sports is the drama of human frailty and split second decion-making, be it player or referee. The bad calls are part of the enjoyment., do we really want to lose that? May as well have robot athletes as well then.
