It’s time for our Q&A rubric, so HealthRider Dr. Lara is on!
What is a panic disorder?
It is an anxiety disorder, its main symptom is panic attacks—sudden and scary episodes of intense fear. While feeling anxious is normal in dangerous situations, panic attacks occur without any specific reason. And if they become recurrent, it is a sign of a panic disorder.
How do panic attacks feel?
As I said, the key emotional symptom is fear. It can be a fear of losing control or a sense of approaching danger even though it is irrational. However, panic attacks also come with physical symptoms. These include a racing heart, chest pain, sweating, shortness of breath, chills, dizziness, nausea, and others.
How dangerous are panic attacks?
Panic attacks are certainly frightening, especially for an unprepared person. But they are not dangerous, and you cannot die from a panic attack. Still, it doesn’t mean that you can refrain from getting help and treatment. In the long run, chronic stress and severe anxiety symptoms can lead to the development of heart diseases and impair hippocampus functioning.
What doctor can treat a panic disorder?
First, you can visit a primary care provider to go through an assessment and rule out physical illnesses that may cause anxiety. Second, you can consult with a mental health professional. A psychologist or a psychiatrist will conduct screening and provide psychotherapy. The latter specialist can also prescribe medications.
Are there any tips for preventing panic attacks?
Sure! And they are pretty simple. Regular physical activity, a healthy diet, stress management, and reduced caffeine and alcohol intake decrease the chances of panic attacks. If you want to take supplements for this purpose, consult with your doctor first. And remember that mental health professionals at MEDvidi are always ready to help.
