The old model of leadership is broken. Command-and-control structures and punitive hierarchies are dying. “Because I said so” is no longer a good enough reason to follow someone. Was it ever?
Toxic workplaces are flourishing, affecting productivity and the bottom line. There was a time that employees would just suck it up and take it. That time is long gone. The pandemic changed our views of the world and solidified what we would and wouldn't tolerate for a paycheck. Put simply, labor is more selective these days.
That selectivity, paired with some missing key workers, has made the labor market extremely volatile. According to the National Women's Law Center, we now have 2 million fewer women in the workforce. The story is worse for women who aren't white and women with disabilities.
So, how do we fix it? We fix it together. We can do hard things.
We can align to a common set of values and impact our own spheres of influence each and every day. Collectively, our actions will make a big contribution to reshaping business and the workplace as we know it.
