It’s time to get out of your own f***ing way

It’s time to get out of your own f***ing way

After years in the corporate world, I finally started my own business. And now I’m stuck.

I’ve tried making some LinkedIn videos, but it hasn’t led to any business.

I’m waiting for my logo to get designed, my Web site to be completed, and my designer has also been dragging his heels on getting me my final brochure.

So, all these things are out of my control and putting my new company’s growth on hold.

What should I do?

Answer: Stop moaning, stop stalling, get your ass out of the starting blocks and start running the damn race.

It’s time to get out of your own way.

Hiding behind process

The story I told above is a familiar refrain I’ve heard from way too many people here on LinkedIn. They have big dreams, lofty goals — and that’s it.

They hide behind process and planning.

They claim that perfectionism is keeping them from moving forward; that everything has to be “just right” before they launch.

They admit it’s a problem, but excuse it all away in the name of “quality.”

Bullshit. It’s called fear.

And it’s so easy to hide behind fear and blame it on “perfectionism” when the truth is, the fault lies squarely with your failure to launch.

Truth be told, as I was writing this article last night (while watching Shark Tank with my kids), billionaire investor Mark Cuban actually told a contestant who had been dragging his heels on a product launch:

Perfection is the enemy of profitability.

Stop your denial. It is fear.

A few weeks ago, I wrote a LinkedIn post about fear being a common deterrent or obstacle for entrepreneurs and founders.

One commenter dissented, claiming that “access to capital” was the biggest deterrent to business founders.

Nope. It’s fear.

Perhaps it’s a fear of putting yourself out there, getting creative and risking it all to try to raise capital for your company — but that’s still fear.

At least a half dozen people here on LinkedIn have told me some version of this quote:

“I’m not a scared person. I take risks. But…”

That’s fine. There’s no value judgement here. But just because you weren’t fearful in one instance doesn’t mean fear can’t hold you back in another.

I’m not scared of bees, yet I’m fearful of heights. One has nothing to do with the other.

So, how can we help you get past your fear?

This program is about no bullshit and no excuses.

Here’s the program: Weekly calls, group video texting, and accountability partners.

It’s that simple.
