It’s time to get involved, for the sake of our next generation

Last year I was relatively quiet (having a 2nd baby is not easy). I had also been disappointed that our country elected a president with such backwards views. The recent shooting less than an hour from my home, attacks on immigrants, and general trends on economic mobility, have gotten me to the point where I can't sit idle. As we get ready for change in 2018, I’d like to list a few clear things we can act on, including joining me on Slack to advance our efforts.
- If you believe that government should be more involved in funding quality health and education, please register Democrat, and participate in local primaries to elect the best possible candidates. If you believe in less government spending, please at least ask politicians and donors to back sensible gun reform, immigration, and environmental policy.
- Educate yourself about local candidates and issues. Media is being dominated by national news. I really want to call out the effort of local startups in Miami for example, who are trying to make an impact: Florida Action Cast, Rise: News, and of course The New Tropic. The podcast series by Florida Action Cast, Drinks with Politicians in Bars, is really worth a listen if you live in Miami.
- Join a local club and support local candidates. Learn how you can help with voter registration efforts and getting local candidates elected. Many of us take for granted who are our representatives in congress at a state and federal level, but these candidates depend on our grassroots organizing to win elections.
- Local Democrat clubs in Miami
- Donate if you can… If you’d like to support the Miami Dade Democrats, we could certainly use your help
- Don’t just post articles on Facebook. Start conversations with friends and neighbors about local candidates and issues, both in person and using more personal digital platforms (whatsapp, messenger, nextdoor, etc.)
If you want to get even more involved with the Miami Dade Dems, I’d like to invite you to our Slack workspace. Why Slack? Because we need a space to tune out the noise, discuss ideas, and organize our actions. We are volunteers, and Slack provides an easy way to devote some time to enacting change. We need people with all sorts of skills to contribute in some way. Everyone has something they can offer.
Join the Miami Dade Dems on Slack here. This link is valid for a few days, otherwise, please request an invite at [email protected]

6 年Agree with Charles, who is always proactive to make change happens. The less we get involved in society and politics, the more it affects our lives
