Hello,

How could we center principles of equity and anti-racism in community engagement? How can public servants scale equitable engagement practices across city government? How can stories empower the voices of historically marginalized communities to have real impact on policy-making?

The City of Portland’s Office of Community and Civic Life and the Centre for Public Impact created the?Portland Citywide Equitable Engagement Cohort?(CEEC) to discuss these questions and more. This cohort was a space for community engagement practitioners across different bureaus to share tools to earn government legitimacy, create cross-bureau relationships, and share methods of equitable engagement to empower historically marginalized residents.

In our?recently published case study on the CEEC, we share more about the program’s goals, structure, and impact. Learn about how participants merged their existing knowledge and cohort learnings to provide recommendations for changes to the engagement structure in the City of Portland. You can also learn how the program and its participants encouraged us at CPI to create future work that is more people-centered and community-centered—all from a trauma-informed lens.

We invite you to read our case study and share your thoughts with us. We hope you are just as inspired by the changemakers within the cohort as we are!

Best wishes,

Alejandra

Reflective practices of authentic listening that set up new feedback principles ?? When communication largely flows one way and we don't do our research before talking to people (yep, "lazy"), just going to community members for their perspectives can be damaging and extractive. Great work changing the game.
