It’s Time for a Change

By Kelsey Alpaio, Senior Associate Editor

I’m thinking about cutting my hair. Or maybe I’ll go back to school. Actually, I think I’ll just pick up everything I own and move to a different country. Do you think I’d look cool with a nose piercing?

This is what my inner monologue sounds like at the start of every new year. There’s something about turning a fresh page that makes me want to change everything about my life. Thankfully, my deep-seated fear of the unknown tends to keep me in check.

In some cases, that’s a good thing—it prevents me from making rash decisions. But other times, it holds me back from doing things that could improve my life. I always find a reason for why “now” isn’t the right time to take a risk.

In her article “Stop Waiting for the ‘Right Time’ to Make a Change ,” Kate Lee discusses this problem. She writes: “The right time is a myth, and when we perpetuate it, we choose to live by default rather than design. We let fear and doubt dictate our choices, drive our decision-making, and limit our potential.”

Lee says a small shift in your thinking can combat this. When considering a change you want to make, instead of asking, “Is now the right time?” ask yourself, “Why is now the right time?” This will encourage you to examine your current situation, why you really want to make a change, and the potential future it could lead to.

Your answer may still be that now isn’t the right time for any big moves, but at least you’ll know that fear didn’t play a factor in making that decision.
