It's Time to Amplify Your Voice: Strategies to Make an Impact

Can we discuss how we can genuinely amplify women's voices? Especially the voices of women 50+?

Let's talk strategy! We need to take concrete actions, challenge the existing norms, and trigger a groundbreaking shift in the way women's viewpoints are appreciated and acknowledged.

It's time to step into the spotlight and make our voices count. Whether you're a woman looking to boost your own voice or an ally ready to champion change, you're in the right place.

Embracing Visibility at 50+: No More Waiting on the Weight

As women in our 50s, 60s, and 70s, navigating the landscape of visibility in business and personal branding can be uniquely challenging. During these years, it's common to feel as though we're beginning to disappear from the very spaces we once commanded with confidence.

This sensation is compounded by physical changes—whether it’s extra weight, wrinkles, or gray hair—that might not align with the unforgiving beauty standards society upholds.

Yet, this is precisely the time when our voices and visions are most potent and necessary.

One inspiring advocate for breaking through these limiting beliefs is Jamie Kern Lima , the founder of IT Cosmetics . Her philosophy of "no waiting on the weight" serves as a powerful reminder that our value and capacity to make an impact do not diminish with age or physical changes.

Jamie famously encourages us to step in front of the camera and our audiences, regardless of whether we feel camera-ready by conventional standards. Her message is clear: our ideas, experiences, and leadership do not wait for us to look a certain way.

Stepping Up

I won't get into the ugly details, but let's just say being in my 50's has not left me lithe and svelte :). When my friend Lori Gama invited me to be on her Path Finder podcast, my first thought was, "not until I lose 20". And then I quieted that voice and said yes!

Why would I let a few extra pounds keep me from sharing my voice with my audience and the world?

Ugh.

Let's stop doing that, please! We need the visbility if our voices are going to change the world!

Why Visibility Matters More Than Ever

Visibility is crucial for personal and professional growth. It's about more than just being seen; it's about being recognized for our contributions and expertise. For women over 50, who often battle the dual stigmas of ageism and appearance, making ourselves visible is both a personal triumph and a radical act of empowerment.

Strategies to Enhance Your Visibility

  1. Leverage Social Media: Platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook are not just for the younger crowd. They offer powerful tools to showcase your expertise and connect with your audience. Share your insights, stories, and the wisdom that only comes with experience.
  2. Public Speaking and Presentations: Whether it’s webinars, podcasts, or live talks, public speaking positions you as an expert and puts your face and voice in front of people. Remember Jamie Kern Lima’s advice: your audience is more interested in what you have to say than how you look saying it.
  3. Content Creation: Write blogs, articles, or start a vlog. Use content to discuss topics you are passionate about and that resonate with your target audience. It’s an excellent way to keep your brand relevant and engaging.

Overcoming the Self-Doubt

It's normal to feel hesitant about putting yourself out there, especially when society often overlooks mature women. However, embracing your authentic self, complete with every wrinkle and gray hair, can be incredibly empowering. Your appearance does not define your capability or your worth. What you bring to the table is a lifetime of experience, resilience, and knowledge.

The Impact of Staying Visible

Staying visible not only helps you build and maintain your business but also sets a powerful example for other women who might feel sidelined by age or appearance. By claiming your space in the spotlight, you challenge stereotypes and redefine what it means to be an influential woman later in life.

I'm a Cover Girl

I was recently invited to be a Cover Girl for Patty Farmer 's Marketing, Media and Money Magazine. I was extremely comfortable writing the featured article about myself and "Overcoming Imposter Syndrome". And then I caught myself, again, feeling squeamish about all the lines on my face. (Ironic since the full title of my article was "Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: The Power fo Self Worth.")

Why do we do this to ourselves? Nevermind societal expectations and norms, sometimes we are our own worst enemies when it comes to tamping down our visibility and voices!

So I'll tell you what I told myself.... get over it!

Ways to Amplify Women's Voices

So let's talk about some ways to support women and thier voices....

Speak Up and Support Each Other

Any time you can, support the voices of the women around you. We don;t have to compete with eachother. We can lift eachother up!

Share the posts, article, videos, books and blogs of the older women you admire. Quote them in your posts. Share them in your feeds. Support them in the boardroom!

Challenge Gender Bias and the Likability Paradox

It's not just about amplifying our own voices, but also calling out bias when we see it. I once worked with a vendor who constantly talked over the women on my team. I had to have a frank conversation with him about how his behavior was impacting others. It wasn't easy, but it led to more awareness and positive change.

Encourage Diverse Voices and Perspectives

It's not just about amplifying women's voices, but encouraging diversity of thought and experience. Some of the most powerful conversations I've had have been with women from different backgrounds than me. Seeking out and championing those diverse perspectives is so important.

Techniques for Amplifying Women's Voices in the Workplace

Let me tell you, when you make a concerted effort to amplify women's voices at work and in the world, amazing things happen.

I've witnessed it firsthand throughout my career. Ideas that might have gone unheard suddenly take center stage. Challenges are tackled from fresh perspectives. And the entire workplace culture begins to shift in a positive direction.

But here's the key: it takes intentional effort. You can't just sit back and hope for the best. Over the years, I've gathered a collection of proven strategies that I've used myself and seen others implement with great success.

Establish Mentorship Programs

One of the best ways to amplify women's voices is through strong mentorship programs.

As an "influencer" I am always availbale to share my expereince when asked. I've had the privilege of mentoring several talented women over the years. Seeing them grow in their confidence and leadership skills has been incredibly rewarding. It's a ripple effect - by uplifting one woman, you create a chain reaction of empowerment.

I've also had amazing female mentors in my life. They have illuminated the path for me and other women, so we could walk our careers with confidence.

Share Career Journeys

One simple but powerful way to amplify women's voices is by encouraging them to share their journeys. I make a point to spotlight the women I work with and their accomplishments whenever I can. Hearing those relatable stories of success and challenges overcome is so inspiring for other women.

Encourage Leadership Development

When women are equipped to lead, their voices become that much more powerful. That's why leadership development opportunities are so crucial. I've seen reserved, soft-spoken women absolutely blossom after going through leadership training. Suddenly, they're the ones confidently speaking up in meetings and driving key decisions.

Leveraging Social Media and Online Platforms

Want to amplify women's voices in a big way? Look no further than social media and online platforms. As an influencer in the LinkedIn space, I can attest to the incredible potential of these tools. Just remember: authenticity and strategy are key to making the most of them.

Utilize Social Media Channels

Social media can be a megaphone for your message. Whenever I have a new blog post or resource to share, I make sure to post about it on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram. It's all about meeting your audience where they are and expanding your reach.

Sharing the love on social media is where it's at. When I come across an inspiring post from a fellow female entrepreneur, you better believe I'm hitting that share button. And don't even get me started on the incredible books written by women - I can't help but shout them from the rooftops. Supporting each other is what it's all about, and it feels amazing to lift up my sisters in business.

Start a Blog

If you really want to dive deep into your expertise and establish your unique voice, starting a blog or a LinkedIn Newsletter (like this one) is a fantastic option. I've been blogging for years, and it's been a game-changer for my personal brand and credibility. The key is to focus on providing value and sharing your authentic perspective.

Create Video Content

When you need to truly connect with your audience, video is the way to go. I always create a short video when I want to drive a point home. Seeing a person's face and hearing their voice - it just builds instant trust and relatability that you can't get any other way.

Speak at Events and Conferences

Speaking at industry events and conferences is an incredible way to amplify your voice and establish yourself as a thought leader. I'll never forget the first time I was invited to speak on a panel of all women leaders. It was nerve-wracking, but so empowering to share my story and insights with a captivated audience.

Leverage Video Conferencing Tools

With Zoom and other video conferencing tools becoming a staple in the remote work era, it's crucial to make your presence known. Utilizing features like the hand-raising function and chat can ensure that everyone's voice is heard, even in a virtual environment.

In the cacophony of the digital world, there's still room for your voice to be heard. Leverage social media, blogging, video, speaking engagements, and virtual meetings to amplify your message and support other women. Consistency is key – keep showing up, keep it real, and keep focusing on what matters most to your audience.

Key Takeaway:?

Amplifying women's voices requires guts, calling out bias, and fostering diversity. It's about speaking up in meetings, mentoring others, challenging workplace norms, and leveraging digital platforms to share our stories. By creating supportive environments and championing each other online and offline, we make real progress toward gender equality.

Conclusion

Amplifying women's voices isn't a one-and-done deal. It's an ongoing commitment to speaking up, challenging bias, and making room for diverse perspectives to shine. It's about mentoring, sponsoring, and cheering each other on as we climb.

Be the voice that echoes through the crowd. Shout from the rooftops and make sure everyone hears you. When we amplify women's voices, we're not just making noise – we're starting a revolution that will shake up the status quo in our offices, neighborhoods, and beyond.

Brilliant, Viveka! I'm often critical of how I look. I'm fine with my gray hair. (Suggests wisdom) Zoom is great, but the camera makes us all look better. I sometimes think what will people say when we meet in person? I trust they'll know me as I am, and my wrinkles won't matter.
