It's Takeover Day!

Today is Takeover Day in England. For museums and heritage sites across the country this is a great opportunity to welcome in younger visitors and get them engaged with new and exciting activities. A whole wealth of activities fit under the Takeover Day umbrella. Some children will be welcoming visitors or running tours, some will be creating or curating, others will be taking over - or even setting up - social media accounts.

Over 4000 children across England took part in Takeover Day 2015

Run by the charity Kids in Museums, last year more than 4000 children across England took part in the event. Many will have never been to their local museum before. As a volunteer for such events, I have seen first hand what a positive impact the day can have on a group of pupils. For kids who had previously passed a monastery ruin near their school every day, donning a monk’s habit and learning a simple chant can suddenly bring ‘a crumbling wall’ to life. From the small-scale to the more ambitious, each Takeover Day event has a huge positive impact on participating students year after year.

In 2015 over 150 museums, arts organisations, archives and heritage sites organised or hosted events across England. So, if you have not signed up so far then please make sure you are part of Takeover Day 2017. After all, it’s a wonderful opportunity for venues to learn from their younger visitors too.
