Dealing with stress is a bit like learning to surf; you've got to ride the waves instead of letting them crash over you. In fact, navigating the waves of stress and anxiety is a skill we all need, especially in today's fast-paced world. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that it's not the stress itself that's the issue; it's how we handle it that truly matters.
Here are five strategies I've picked up along the way to keep my head above water:
- Throwback Playlists: Ever wonder why those old tracks from your teens hit different? Turns out, there's some science behind it. Those tunes have a unique way of dialing down the stress, bringing back simpler times. Whenever I'm wound up, I dive into those old playlists and let the music do its thing. You can listen to that playlist here
, and don't worry - there's some new school music thrown in there too, for good measure.
- Nature Walks: There's legit research backing the mood-boosting effects of being outdoors, especially in the woods. Something about the earth and trees acts like a natural antidepressant. Whenever I need to clear my head, you'll find me on a trail, reconnecting with the great outdoors, but most mornings: I actually start my day with a walk in the woods. It's good for the soul
- Mindfulness Practices: Whether it's meditation or a moment of prayer, taking time to center myself makes a world of difference. It's about finding a bit of stillness in the everyday hustle, a pause button for the mind, and giving gratitude for, well, everything. There's a saying I love: "where energy goes, the universe flows", so taking time to sit in gratitude often leads me to find even more things to be grateful for.
- Singing Out Loud: No surprise here, but belting out a tune is a serious stress buster. It's not just about the music; it's the whole act – the deep breaths, the posture, the vibration. It's like a mini workout for your emotions. And giving ourselves permission to creatively express ourselves is never a bad thing.
- Songwriting Sessions: This one might sound a bit self-serving, but hear me out. During my last song-a-day challenge, the high-pressure days surprisingly led to some of my best work. Turning stress into lyrics not only helped me process what I was feeling but also resulted in some tracks I'm really proud of. And they definitely helped me get out of my head and onto paper some things that had been swirling for a while. Being able to sing those overwhelming thoughts is incredibly cathartic.
If the whole write-a-song-a-day thing intrigues you, check out the short documentary film we made on my last one back in 2022 - directed and filmed by Gene Sizemore.
Anyway, that was two years ago. It was about time I set myself another challenge... Which leads me to the official first single of 2024:Yep. After my latest write a song a day challenge, I'm thrilled to announce the release of "Harmony," a track inspired by - well - not what you might expect, actually. The wars in Ukraine x Russia, Israel x Palestine, Syria, Afghanistan, Ethiopia... the list goes on.
Harmony is also my call-out against racism, bigotry, inequality, and inequity, especially in the lead up to this year's election cough cough... and I'll officially be releasing it on April 28. I can't wait for you to hear it.
Mark your calendars and keep the afternoon of April 28 free. I'd love for you to join me in celebrating this release, a testament to the power of music in transforming stress into something beautiful. Details to come very soon.
Looking forward to sharing this moment with you. Have an amazing day on purpose,
