It’s Not About the Story. It’s About How It’s Told.

So many people ask me if their story is interesting or unique enough and I usually respond with the fact that my personal story isn’t all that unique and yet I’ve made it into eight books and dozens of articles. It doesn’t matter what the story is; it’s how it’s told. Eat Pray Love is a book, essentially, about a woman going on a trip and it’s sold 12 million copies.
This means that you need to worry less about how unique your story is and more about how unique you are. What is your voice? Are you earnest or dry, serious or self-effacing? Whatever your voice is, embrace it. My favorite compliment I get about my writing is when people tell me they felt like they were hanging out with me when reading one of my books.?
Really want to prove this to yourself? Read the first paragraph of three different books to see a variety of author voices; come up with an adjective to describe each and take in how different they are.
