It's So Hard to Say Goodbye: Simplify Your Skincare with the 90/90 Rule

It's So Hard to Say Goodbye: Simplify Your Skincare with the 90/90 Rule

In a world overflowing with skincare products and beauty trends, it can be incredibly challenging to let go of items that no longer serve us. To stay focused on what truly works, I also do a seasonal reorganization of my beauty products (makeup, skin/ body care & fragrance). This process helps me spotlight the heavy hitters that delivered results and clear out the ones that fell flat. This week let’s delve into the 90/90 rule—a powerful decluttering technique that can transform your skincare routine, similar to how expert's makeover disorganized spaces. Inspired by the idea of making informed decisions about what to keep, this rule can help you simplify your beauty regimen and enhance your glow!

A trend that aligns perfectly with this philosophy is skinimalism—a movement that has been making waves for a couple of years and shows no signs of slowing down. Skinimalism is all about simplifying your skincare routine to just a few essential products, embracing a broader cultural shift towards self-acceptance and natural beauty. This approach emphasizes simplicity, reduced sensitivity, improved skin health, and environmental sustainability. I remember when singer, songwriter, and pianist Alicia Keys boldly chose to attend major events showcasing her natural skin instead of a full glam look. The reactions were astonishing! Many people were taken aback, but as a skin and self-care coach, I saw it as a brilliant move. Alicia has fabulous skin, and it’s inspiring to see this trend gain traction—a refreshing testament to the idea that less truly can be more!

So, what is the 90/90 Rule? The 90/90 Rule encourages you to assess your belongings (or skincare products) by asking yourself two essential questions:

  • Have I used this product in the past 90 days?
  • If not, will I likely use it in the next 90 days?

If you haven’t used a product, take a moment to explore why. Was it an impulse buy? Do you already have products that serve the same purpose? Identifying these reasons can help clarify what should stay and what can go.

At Urban Beauty Source, we often find that products accumulate over time, leading to overwhelming choices and inconsistency in routines. Many people struggle to adhere to a regimen when faced with too many options. The 90/90 Rule helps you focus on the essentials, making it easier to cultivate a routine that truly benefits your skin.

Steps to Apply the 90/90 Rule to Your Routine:

  • Assess Your Collection: Take a moment to evaluate your skincare stash. Are there products you haven’t touched in the last 90 days? If so, consider if they still deserve a spot on your shelf.
  • Evaluate Each Product: For the items you haven’t used, think about whether you genuinely foresee using them in the next 90 days. If not, it may be time to bid farewell!
  • Streamline Your Routine: Focus on a select few products that align with your skin type and goals. A curated skincare routine allows for consistent application and better results.

Embracing the 90/90 Rule can lead to healthier skin. By decluttering your products, you can concentrate on what works best for you, ultimately enhancing your confidence and simplifying your experience.

Saying goodbye to products that no longer serve you doesn’t mean sacrificing your skincare journey. Instead, it’s about making room for a routine that enhances your natural glow. By implementing the 90/90 Rule, you can transform your approach to skincare in a way that feels liberating.

Oo yes. I also think we’d do a lot better if we chose to try something for 5weeks/45 days (skin cell regeneration point) to see how we react to a new product before consuming more.
