It's smart to be a woman who asks...

Lots of research documents that women simply don't ask for what they want and need. We tend to ask less (or not at all) for titles or raises we deserve,?the household help we need from our husbands or partners, and the reciprocal help we could get from other women in our personal and professional lives.

In fact, there's a whole book on the topic:?Women Don't Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide. This week I experienced the power of asking—in this case it involved my daughter's search for an entry-level social policy job. I remembered a woman I crossed paths with several times—not a friend, per se, but someone I've conversed with,?followed and admired.

Thinking about approaching her I hesitated a bit: Would she remember me? Was the networking ask for my daughter overstepping? Should I bother someone who is obviously involved in so many high-level initiatives? I'm sure various networking hesitations have run through your head, too. But the good news is...
