It's a Small World: Dog Days Are Over
Greetings Friends
Have you ever wondered where the phrase “dog days of summer” comes from? When I heard it as a kid it was usually in reference to late summer afternoon baseball games, with teams no longer in contention for the post-season.
Boy, was I wrong.
In this month’s newsletter, I’ll be introducing you to a wonderful realtor who is a true expert in Manhattan’s West Village, debuting my new website and explaining what the aforesaid canine reference actually means.
The West Village Expert: Meet Danielle Sevier
Danielle Sevier is flat-out cool and her moniker, Zen in the Art of Real Estate, is an apt one as she is an oasis of serenity, while fiercely guarding her client’s best interests. A nationally ranked tennis player while growing up and a graduate of NYU, this native New Yorker first honed her creative eye as a photographer. And while she applies her skills on behalf of clients all over the city, it is downtown, where she has lived and worked for 25 years, that she can truly be called a street-by-street expert.
Meet Danielle in the video below and should NYC be a destination you’d like to explore – be it uptown, downtown or someplace in between – I’d be thrilled to introduce you to my associate, Danielle Sevier.
What’s In A Website?
Some of you know that before I became a realtor, I spent some 20 years in the digital marketing space. For many of those years, the holy grail was to build a dynamic website that could be customized for the client in a timely fashion. It rarely occurred and when it did, it was painful, laborious, and expensive. That’s why I’m so proud that with the help of the good folks at Luxury Presence, I was able to design, build and launch my new website in less than 4 weeks.
I’d love you to take a look and share it with someone you know who needs meaningful representation as they consider building out their real estate strategy.

It’s been said many times before, life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans. I initially introduced this new listing last week through the Compass Private Exclusive Network to buyers who would be interested in an as-is purchase with the intent to renovate and flip.
The off-market strategy worked. After 8 showings, we received an offer that we gratefully accepted. And then, tragedy befell the buyer and the deal was cancelled. And, that's sometimes how it goes. So, now, we’re now taking a few weeks to tidy things up and then bring it to the open market in September.
More to come shortly.
The Dog Days of Summer
The classic “dog days” of summer are the five weeks beginning July 3rd; typically the hottest, most unbearable days of summer in much of the northern hemisphere. And, while some believe the reference is to those hot, sultry days that are “not fit for a dog,” and others suggest that extreme heat drives dogs mad, the real reference is to Sirius, the Dog Star.
During the “Dog Days” period, the Sun occupies the same region of the sky as Sirius, the brightest star visible from any part of Earth. Sirius is part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. In the summer, Sirius rises and sets with the Sun. On July 23rd, specifically, it is in conjunction with the Sun, and because the star is so bright, the ancient Romans believed it actually gave off heat and added to the Sun’s warmth. They referred to this time as diēs caniculārēs, or “dog days.” Thus, the term Dog Days of Summer came to mean the 20 days before and 20 days after this alignment of Sirius with the Sun—July 3 to August 11 each year.
So, now that you know, marvel at the different ways the phrase has made it’s way into popular culture:

Thank you.
A native Angeleno, I grew up in a "show-biz family" and began my career as a third-generation theatrical agent impacting the careers of actors including the likes of Crispin Glover, Ray Liotta and Demi Moore. After beginning a family, I traded Sunset Blvd for Madison Avenue and spent the next 20 years in advertising, creating and implementing marketing strategies that drove new business growth, resulting in the successful onboarding of clients such as Coca-Cola, Comcast, Electronic Arts, Nike, Pinkberry, Princess Cruises and the US Army among many others.
I now apply those same principles of agency; integrity, accountability and hustle to my clients as we work together to define and fulfill their real estate strategies.
