"It's Probably Nothing", my doctor says

Every woman does her best to take care of herself and her health. Yet, sometimes our regular check-ups are not so regular. I consider myself quite healthy, but lately things had been a bit off. So I saw my doctor. And he saw something that is probably nothing…
A routine check-up
Going to the OB-GYN isn’t exactly the stuff dreams are made of. There’s poking and prodding in very intimate places. Add the ultrasound wand and not much is left to the imagination. I can see the ultrasound image on the screen and try to relax.
A dark spot
This spot looks like it doesn’t belong. And I can tell my doctor feels the same. He keeps going back and forth in the same area. He takes a picture, measures the spot’s size, and tells me he wants to do a biopsy. Just to make sure, but it’s probably nothing.
This hurts
He inserts a 15-inch stick and cuts off a piece. Ouch! Then he tells me I will know by Friday if it’s normal or abnormal. But, not to worry because it’s probably nothing.
Waiting is torture
I now understand all women who wait for a diagnosis. Days drag by. Friday comes and goes without any news. And, of course, this is weekend my man had planned with his pals ages ago and I am left alone to deal with the terror of my own thoughts.
Give more to yourself
I did my best to keep the bad thoughts at bay and wondered instead how I could turn this into something good. Then it dawned on me. I have to give to myself more. And stop punishing myself when things go wrong.
So, I treated myself all weekend long. I went to the museum, listened to a lecture, cooked myself good food, drank some nice wine, went to the gym and steam room, and enjoyed the outdoors with a hike. I rushed nothing and treated myself like a very important person. Only positive thoughts and emotions allowed.
A big wake-up call
Today I got the call from the doctor. It’s nothing. Well, actually that’s not quite right. It is a something. But not the something I feared. It is a wake-up call big enough to freak us all out.
So here’s the takeaway I learned and want to invite you to share it with me:
Give more to yourself. Not when you’ve done all your chores, but RIGHT NOW. For no other reason than because you are so fabulous.
Ready to start? Hit reply and tell me what you are giving to yourself right now. I just made myself a cup of my favorite tea and wrote a non-business post sharing how I feel. I enjoyed that.
You are brilliant—always remember it. Now go do something nice for your brilliant self.

6 年Today I didn't rush out this door to grab my favourite parking spot before I catch my train. I took my time, knowing that I'd have to park in the extra lot. I walked slowly, not my usual morning huff. I still got to work on time. That felt nice. It's the little things
