These are the facts we cannot ignore for our profession's sake.

With a seemingly unstoppable force, American Medical Association fighting “scope creep” against pharmacists for the physician turf when the physician shortage is anticipated to grow. Not one practicing physician we have encountered is actually in support of this move against pharmacists.

Meanwhile, pharmacy schools continue onward with an average 12,000-13,000 graduates yearly. Check out their 2022–2023 fiscal year revenues of approximately $31 million, with a median of around $18 million.

Just this year, Benjamin Jolley called out over 2400+ pharmacies that have closed. While the demand for pharmacists is anticipated to grow, the current model with #PBM’s, the current workplace breeds burnout, and the lack of rapid expansion of the profession leaves that up for debate unless massive change occurs..??

Just this year Pharmacist layoffs were anticipated around 10,000 given these closures. Add in the extra layer of AI to consider the impact on the future for the traditional pharmacist profession.

The pharmacist salary continues to trend downward as we see a saturated market paired with record inflation. An offering just this week for a newly licensed pharmacist was $44 an hour. My very first interview and offer was a $70,000 salary in 2018, and I had no option to live with parents while sitting with that $210K debt lingering.?

This is not fear mongering our #pharmacist profession, it’s simply the writing on the wall. Many are sharing that the profession is not a "safe" profession and has become a career for many as they look for or already have exited for alternative options.

There’s an unsettling need for change with an unmatched amount of action and initiative.?

Pharmacists are proud of their capabilities and training. Yet timid and people pleasing to ensure we aren’t ruffling the feathers when the profession is overdue for advancement to align with the capabilities nor stand for the boundaries we need to work safely. We have watch other health professions advance forward - so what’s the hold up?

Staying stagnant in the status quo or frankly, unsatisfied or complacent will lead this profession into extinction. There’s a national movement coming for pharmacists.?

? It's time pharmacists work within more of the clinical teams.?

? It’s time to see all the roles pharmacists play hiding throughout the various systems.?

? It’s time PBMs stop taking advantage of pharmacies with unfair practices.

? It’s time for the science and research pharmacists are a part of in making history.?

? It’s time the world sees the impact this profession makes in an attempt to better everyone.?

? It’s time state legislation recognizes the value of a pharmacist in these times of physician shortages.??

? It’s time the world sees the impact being made on the clinical decisions and knowledge pharmacists have.??

We need a powerful, stead-fast and collective move.

Together, mountains will move for the profession. It only moves if we do this together. Ready to be a part of the change we as pharmacists need to see? If not, consider asking yourself if you’re part of the problem.
