It’s okay for everyone to be talking at once
Nothing signals the end of a meeting like that moment when everyone has drifted off into their own conversations. While this probably drives some people mad, it’s really a natural way for ideas to progress and a chance to get details flushed out—the real point of networking in the first place.
Having a lot of social followers isn’t much help if you don’t know them well enough to ask for their advice or opinions. Usually, we all know one person with great connections, the one who scrolls through their phone and gives you two or three names, whether you need a costume designer or a concrete wall fabricator.
How do you build an empire? First things first: Be the one everyone wants to play with. Be honest, forthcoming and diligent. Become a well-rounded source and expand your knowledge about things you are already interested in. Be better. Make sure folks know exactly who you are and what you know. Then, make sure you are fishing in the right spots—typically these are places the other anglers haven’t discovered yet.
Networking can be disrupting, and even noisy, at times, especially when we’re swimming in specifications, testing new materials and methods, or making sure we’ve measured three times before turning on the laser cutter. Bring on the chaos!
