While the topic of mental health is not unheard of, it got even more attention this past week. Legendary gymnastic athlete Simone Biles withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics’ Team Finals & Individual Finals in order to focus on her mental health. This was a defining moment in Simone’s life because, like many elite athletes, she was known to push through any tough moment that comes her way.
Every Olympic athlete entering the Olympic village has a tremendous amount of pressure on their shoulders from their country, coach, family, and friends. Millions of people are rooting for their victory. On top of training for 4 years, the external pressure understandably takes a toll on their mental health.?
“Biles’ decision comes as athletes, particularly since Michael Phelps revealed his struggle with depression, have come forward about their experiences with anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. Just a little over a month ago, Naomi Osaka pulled out of the French Open after citing the harmful effect of press conferences on her mental health, and her struggles with depression.“ - Time
Just like athletes, the rest of us are battling mental health on a daily basis. Whether it’s the year-long fight with Covid impacts, managing work-life stress, or living up to the expectations of the people in our life. We all have struggles that we conveniently ignore.?
Even though there’s a stigma attached to mental health especially in Asia, it’s high time that we started increasing awareness around this topic. And it’s not something only celebrities or athletes experience, mental health is important to everyone.
Whether it’s anxiety, depression, stress, anything — draw your attention towards it, talk it out with someone you trust, and work through the process.
When Olympic champions withdraw from such a huge event, it only reaffirms the fact that taking of ourselves is definitely not a crime.
However, I have an interesting observation on this. Hear me out.?

?It’s interesting because we want to cultivate a habit of not quitting but we also want to cultivate a habit of knowing when to take a break. We need to learn and understand what that means. Do you agree?
